If you are sensitive to scents you may be wondering if the Richway Amethsyt Biomat® smells bad, stinks, has a toxic scent or gives off gas. The honest answer is it depends.

Personally, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being very sensitive) I’m about a 7 for sensitivity to scents. I hold my breath as I walk through a department store perfume section and I avoid the laundry detergent aisle at the grocery store. I can get sick from overpowering smells, like new shower curtains or carpets.
However, I do enjoy some scents and can easily be present to essentials oils used in aromatherapy, and fragrant meals cooking.

Back in 2011 Richway did have an issue with a glue that was used in the carrying case, which affected a few shipments. The problem was corrected.

I did have one client a few years ago who is hypersensitive to scents who rented my mini Biomat® and the Amethsyt pillow. She enjoyed the experience and decided to purchase the Amthyst pillow. When the product arrived, she said it smelled, and she was surprised because the one she rented didn’t smell (it was about 1 1/2 years old at that time).

She had to leave the Amethyst pillow outside in her garage for a few weeks to off gas the scent/smell before she could use her pillow.

I have also reviewed comments from others online who are sensitive to smells and off gassing. And it seems like whether or not the Biomat® smells depends on the person and their level of sensitivity. And from what I read, each person who had trouble with the smell found that it dissipated after leaving it to off gas in another area before they used it.

More recently (in 2016) when a new Mini Biomat® and Professional Biomat® arrived, I noticed that the control panel smelled really bad. It has dissipated over the weeks and I don’t noticed it now, but please be aware that you will likely need to let the control panel portion off gas.

Overall, if you are sensitive to smells, you can order the Biomat®, and if you notice a smell, you should be o.k. airing it out for a few weeks or so. If the smell is too overwhelming, you could return it within the first a week for a full refund of the cost of the Biomat®.
